I'm tired! I'm working too hard! I have good friends around me! Pub Quiz tonight! Toga party last week! Photos soon!

Proper update soon. Promise.

  2005.12.20  00.30

Well, I'm bloody bored, though I'm enjoying the fact that Windows Media Player has turned up some Rachmaninov. Result.

Can't go back to work until after the Christmas holidays, and even then, I have to go see the Doc on the first Monday after they finish to see if I'm allowed back :(

Went to the staff Christmas party on Friday which, whilst enjoyable, was very stressful indeed. It's hard for some people to get with the idea that I can't really talk properly, even after a month. The most annoying aspects of the night were that I was driving, so couldn't drink; and the fact that a large proportion of people spoke to me as if I was a fucking idiot. That annoyed me a lot.

Matt visited which made a nice change and gave me some company. We went to the pub, played some pool (some good, some bad) - watched the football, and played some Super Mario Kart. I rocked the party.

Chutney is back. Good.

Off to America on Thursday - bit worried about the state of my voice, but there's nothing I can do now.

Christmas shopping avec Matty tomorrow. Hopefully find the presents I need!

And I'll sign off to the lovely stylings of Primer 55. Excelente.

  2005.11.25  21.53

So, I'm getting more bored than I ever thought possible sitting at home instead of going to work. I hope my kids are doing well - I'm sure they are, as the old Head of Department is the supply teacher in for me while I'm off work.

Things I've been up to:

Played Uplink a bit - can't really be bothered with it though - been there, done it before

Played a bit of Timesplitters 3, but don't really have the coordination to do anything with it at the moment, though it did occur to me that I don't play it enough anymore.

Played some Eastside Hockey Manager - going okay, but I feel I have bankrupted the Pittsburgh Penguins. Errors.

In terms of TV watching (of which there has been *A LOT* given that I can't do much else), I've been mostly watching the first series of 24, along with the 2nd series of Angel. Thoroughly entertaining TV.

I have also watched the following films on DVD:

Any Given Sunday
American Beauty
Swingers (Money, baby!)
The Hustler
The Colour of Money
Ghostbusters II
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Jerry Macguire
Almost Famous
Vanilla Sky
Star Wars
Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jedi

plus various others, not necessarily in that order.

In health terms, my speech is still extremely sketchy - I'm speaking with a nasty stutter, and the doc isn't sure how long it's going to stick around for, though I'm being referred to a speech therapist to try and give it a helping hand. My head is feeling much better, though that may be because it's been battered into submission by an awful lot of painkillers. I'm currently taking around 16 tablets a day of varying types and strength, but hopefully that's not going to last too much longer, and I can get back into driving, and get back to work. Anything rather than sit around the house doing fuck all for another week would be preferable.

One day, I'll wake up and my head will be fine. I'm sure of it, but in the meantime, it's doctors and neurologists for the foreseeable future again. I really though I'd seen the back of this a long time ago :(

How is it possible that I did not know about this?

In the highly improbable event that nextdoor Dan gets to read this, he'll probably realise quite how absurd a situation this is (even more so considering it managed to pass me by.)

Utterly ridiculous.

Slightly disappointing production though, especially considering he scored 7 points in his first game.

I shouldn't be using the internet! I had a big old migraine and scared the shit out of everybody at work. I'm now probably sidelined for about another week or so. Was in hospital, but only for about 7 hours :)

I am in America.

Man, was I drunk (and sick) yesterday. All day hangovers DO NOT RULE.

It is very hot in California.

Apparently, I am a serial killer.

Oh, and US Customs suck ass.

You are 85% Rational, 28% Extroverted, 71% Brutal, and 85% Arrogant.
You are the Sociopath! As a result of your cold, calculating rationality, your introversion (and ability to keep quiet), your brutality, and your arrogance, you would make a very cunning serial killer. You care very little for the feelings of others, possibly because you are not a very emotional person. You are also very calculating and intelligent, making you a perfect criminal mastermind. Also, you are a very arrogant person, tending to see yourself as better than others, providing you a strong ability to perceive others as weak little animals, thus making it easier to kill them. In short, your personality defect is the fact that you could easily be a sociopath, because you are calculating, unemotional, brutal, and arrogant. Please don't kill me for writing mean things about you!

To put it less negatively:

1. You are more RATIONAL than intuitive.

2. You are more INTROVERTED than extroverted.

3. You are more BRUTAL than gentle.

4. You are more ARROGANT than humble.

Your exact opposite is the Hippie.

Other personalities you would probably get along with are the Spiteful Loner, the Smartass, and the Capitalist Pig.

If you scored near fifty percent for a certain trait (42%-58%), you could very well go either way. For example, someone with 42% Extroversion is slightly leaning towards being an introvert, but is close enough to being an extrovert to be classified that way as well. Below is a list of the other personality types so that you can determine which other possible categories you may fill if you scored near fifty percent for certain traits.

The other personality types:

The Emo Kid: Intuitive, Introverted, Gentle, Humble.

The Starving Artist: Intuitive, Introverted, Gentle, Arrogant.

The Bitch-Slap: Intuitive, Introverted, Brutal, Humble.

The Brute: Intuitive, Introverted, Brutal, Arrogant.

The Hippie: Intuitive, Extroverted, Gentle, Humble.

The Televangelist: Intuitive, Extroverted, Gentle, Arrogant.

The Schoolyard Bully: Intuitive, Extroverted, Brutal, Humble.

The Class Clown: Intuitive, Extroverted, Brutal, Arrogant.

The Robot: Rational, Introverted, Gentle, Humble.

The Haughty Intellectual: Rational, Introverted, Gentle, Arrogant.

The Spiteful Loner: Rational, Introverted, Brutal, Humble.

The Sociopath: Rational, Introverted, Brutal, Arrogant.

The Hand-Raiser: Rational, Extroverted, Gentle, Humble.

The Braggart: Rational, Extroverted, Gentle, Arrogant.

The Capitalist Pig: Rational, Extroverted, Brutal, Humble.

The Smartass: Rational, Extroverted, Brutal, Arrogant.

Every, the Lifeverse and Thinguni

So... realistically I haven't updated since April, bar a couple of random things. I'm not sure whether anything has really happened in my life since then, but I'll type out some of the mundane stuff anyway.

I lost my markbook at school. Any of you who have ever dabbled with teaching will understand how horrifying that is - it basically meant that at Parent's evening, I had to remember everything about everyone. Fucking scary!

My Dad has been promoted - He's now Director of Education Services for the Hexham & Newcastle diocese. It basically means he's in charge of all Catholic schools in the NorthEast, which essentially makes him my boss. Fuck's sake!

My two year 10s who I'm put through Maths GCSE in a year have one exam left, and then it's all done. I really hope they get A*s, or I'm going to feel like I've wasted a lot of their time.

Robbie visited at half term... We played a lot of pool (I'm finally showing signs of improvement after an impressive crash in form!), and had a lot of the beer. A LOT of the beer. I haven't been drinking much recently overall, because I'm trying to watch my wallet.

I am especially trying to watch my wallet this month, because my car just went in for it's MOT, and cost me an impressive five hundred and thirty pounds. I then had to get car tax, which cost a less impressive one hundred and ten pounds. Then the quarterly gas and electricity bills came, and I wanted to blow my fucking brains out. It's generally okay, because I managed to save up a bit of money coming into this month, but I was planning on spending it in California, where instead I shall have to live like a bit of a pauper!

Think of a number between 1 and 10

Multiply it by 9

Add 7

Multiply it by 4

Subtract 12

Half your number

Subtract 8

Divide by the number you first thought of

Take away 11.

My lucky number is 7.

I have a lesson to teach some year 6s from one of our feeder primaries on Wednesday, but I'm not sure what topic to do it on. Probability is always a good bet, as I get to get out my giant cards and my giant sponge dice, but I fucking *always* do probability when I have to do something good for kids. I'm wondering if I could do something else.

Sin City - Superb
Mr and Mrs. Smith - Entertaining

Adaptation - Excellent
The Color of Money - Poolcentric
Friends - Pretty good
Wall Street - Fucking brilliant

Plus other random stuff.

Six "all time favourite" songs:
1. Everlong - Foo Fighters
2. Only in Dreams - Weezer
3. I Think the Answer's Yes - The Beautiful South
4. Golden Brown - The Stranglers
5. Seventeen - Jimmy Eat World
6. Minus Blindfold - The Deft Ones

Six "current favourite" songs:
1. Mr Brightside - The Killers
2. Never is a Promise - Fiona Apple
3. Drop the Pressure - Mylo
4. Favourite Girl - Carrie
5. Black Horse & The Cherry Tree
6. Amphetamine - Everclear

Went down to see Mike in Leeds. Had a nice night out. Saw Bombhead from Hollyoaks. He has *REALLY* big hair.

Computer Games:

Been playing Gradius V a bit, but it's difficult (shocker!!) Getting there with it, but it's still a bit hit and miss as to whether I manage to take out the boss at the end of level 3 or not.

Played Super Punch Out on the SNES for the first time in *years*. Beat everybody first time including the special circuit. The depressing thing is that I feel this is quite impressive, but I doubt very much whether anybody reading this has any idea of the difficulty involved!

Also, bought EHM for £5 2nd hand. Been playing it a lot. That's a fact.

So yeah. That's pretty much fucking it. Good luck to my kids in their exams.

Fuck it.

What an absolute pile of shit.

Bollocks to this:

You scored as Angel. Angel: Angels are the guardians of all things, from the smallest ant to the tallest tree. They give inspiration, love, hope, and positive emotion. They live among humans without being seen. They are the good in all things, and if you feel alone, don't fear. They are always watching. Often times they merely stand by, whispering into the ears of those who feel lost. They would love nothing more then to reveal themselves, but in today's society, this would bring havoc and many unneeded questions. Give thanks to all things beautiful, for you are an Angel.

So, the holidays have been okay, though I'm mysteriously short of cash :( Not quite sure what I've spent it on, but I suppose simply doing stuff has drained the funds.

On the bright side, poker has been relatively profitable this fortnight. I've withdrawn a bit of money, and still have quite a bit left. All good things.

I started the holiday by playing a lot of Timesplitters: Future Perfect, but it's depressingly easy compared to Timesplitters 2, so I'm kind of finished with it for a while. I have since moved on to both Gran Turismo 4 and Metal Gear Solid 3, though the last couple of days it's been mainly MGS3. It's quite enjoyable, though I can't help thinking that sometimes the cutscenes should be a little bit shorter. The bosses have also all been ridiculously easy, apart from The End who, in fairness, was ridiculously easy but very time consuming. The fat old git.

Other things I've done during the holidays include finishing 9th on tiebreakers by 0.8 fucking percent in the magic PTQ I played in (ubergeekery!!!)

Films I've watched this week (all on DVD, as I couldn't be bothered to go to the cinema):

Field of Dreams
Tin Cup
Bull Durham
Sliding Doors
The Usual Suspects
Lost in Translation
Infernal Affairs
Battle Royale 2 (fucking awful)
Jerry Maguire
Training Day
Welcome to the Jungle
Any Given Sunday

And, as we all know, I like films.

And that, basically, has been my 2pm-5am schedule life for the last 2 weeks. Back to school on monday. Looking forward to it. Ish.

Fuck it.

It's snowing. Again.

I'm smoking too many cigarettes, and I'm working too hard. I need to slow the fuck down.

I've just eaten 5 packets of crisps in about 10 minutes.

So... my parents are selling the house. Got it valued today, and apparently it's worth a lot of money, but it still feels an awful lot like home, and I imagine always will. They're going to put it on the market in a couple of weeks, but for all they know it could sit there for a matter of years before it sells.

I'm not sure whether the selling of my parents' house is a transitional point in my life or not, after all, I haven't lived there in around 5 years, but it does seem very odd. A lot of families move around, inhabit other houses, but not mine. We just sit around, never throw anything out, and collect a fuckload of junk.

I am tired, my knees hurt. I'm about to go smoke a cigarette. I'm going to Leicester in a couple of days, which, as always, means the likelihood of a chance meeting with one of the many people I should still be in touch with, but am not. All part and parcel of being the world's most lazy communicator.

Why do I find it so hard to continue communication with other people, when I am clearly an able communicator? It's like owning a ferrari and leaving it in the garage, or, alternatively, like being incredibly talented at something and wasting your life. It's also a lot like being able to do pretty much anything you want and choosing to earn peanuts. How very odd.

Of course, I can in no way complain about my station in life, after all, it's exactly where I chose to be, and I enjoy it thoroughly.

I do wonder what I could have done with myself had I decided to apply myself earlier, instead of fucking about at school and ignoring everything anybody ever said to me on the premise that I knew better. I still think that, in the majority of situations, I was right, and I did know better.

Life is odd sometimes.

Verse, the everylife and thinguni

So.... Once again, I have epically neglected all of my friends, and Livejournal, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. On the bright side, my word of the day at school today was eleemosynary, which is a fucking great word.

School's going really well, but it's still a devastating amount of work. We're in the middle of a departmental review at the moment, which should be interesting. Hopefully I'll come out of it looking okay.

Went skiing in Les Arcs for 2 weeks over Christmas. Miguel took some photos, which can be found here:

The other people in the photos are people I went skiing with. On the first page, from left to right:
Photo 1,2: Vanessa, Jeroen, my head Photo 5: Eddie, Me, Kit's head, Sjoerd. The bloke in the orange somewhere later on is Paul, and the other girl knocking around with Vanessa is Jeni. It was a great holiday, but I was a bit drunk. There's a photo in there of a gully we went through, but the photo doesn't do the steepness justice, so I won't point it out.

Love & Hugs to my friends - Adios.

Tetris, motherfucker.

  2004.11.10  17.08

So... Off school with a chest infection. Funnily enough, when I was *at* school, this would have been an absolute result, but now that I work there, it's maddeningly infuriating.

So anyway - I've missed 5 days of the last 6, and the 1 day I did go in, I got sent home. I'm supposed to be on a course tomorrow, but I don't think I'll go, so it'll be yet another day of sitting around being bored.

It also means I'm falling behind on my work at school, and my classes are all now a week behind the workscheme (more in the case of my Year 7's, as I keep doing totally random things with them instead of the work they're supposed to be doing. Erk.)

I cannot stop coughing, which SUCKS.

I have been playing GTA: San Andreas, which is good, but I don't think I like it as much as Vice City. I guess I'm a bit more into the 80's and gangsters than I am the 90's and gangstas.

I've been having daily saunas to try and get rid of the cold/infection. They're grrrrreat.

So anyway, yes - that's why I've been shit at getting in touch with people, because I have mostly been lying on the sofa.

Fuck it.

Windy Day

Why are kids so excitable on windy days?

Today was *not good*

The kids were bouncing off the walls, and I couldn't do a damn thing to stop it! It's very annoying when that happens, because I'm letting down the ones who *do* want to learn, while I'm dealing with the disruptive element :(

Only my Y7's and Y8's got *anything* done today, and in fairness, Y7 just played a place-value game.

Fuck it.

  2004.09.08  18.33

I gave out 6 after school detentions in my first week of teaching.

In the words of one of my Year 9's:

"Sir, you teach my sister and she says you're dead nice, so how come you're mean to us lot?"

Amused me greatly ::g::

I like my year 7's, but they're a bit quiet
I like my year 8's, but one of them's very loud
I'm not sure about my Year 9's, and about 5 of them are annoying
I'm not sure about my year 10's, but they seem nice so far
My year 11's are *amazing*
My year 12's are funny.
